If you wish to pursue a career as a minibus driver, it is important that you have the experience and the appropriate driver's license to be a possible candidate for this role.
Below is some information on how people usually gain their minibus driving license including the different tests and steps they have to go through.
Step 1 - Medical
First things first, to begin the process of becoming a minibus driver you must start by passing a medical examination, which is carried out by a local GP. If successful the candidate may then proceed by applying for their provisional PCV (Passenger Carrying Vehicle) licence.
Step 2 - Theory
The next step is to pass the theory test, which has to be done before you start your practical training. The theory test takes part in local test centres and is computer based. During this test you are allocated 40 minutes in which to answer 35 multiple choice questions. In order to pass the theory test you must answer 30 questions right out of a possible 35. If you are successful you will then be issued with a certificate as confirmation of your passing the test and enabling you to then undertake practical training.
Step 3 - Driver Training
Now that you have your provisional D1 entitlement, you are now entitled to train as a minibus driver provided that the minibus you are using displays L plates at the front and rear of the vehicle, and you are accompanied by a driver who holds a full licence with the category D1 entitlement.
Step 4 - Minibus Driving Test
Once you are considered ready, you will then be able to apply to take your PCV test. The test can last as long as 90 minutes, during which you will be required to demonstrate a safe and competent driving standard, knowledge of the highway code and simple vehicle inspection/maintenance checks. These tests start at the nearest heavy goods vehicle testing station and the tasks are performed on a variety of roads both urban and rural.
Step 5 - Apply for your Licence
If you are successful on your test and pass, then you are nearly classed a minibus driver. Although the pass certificates that you received when passing the PCV driving test, must then be sent to the appropriate governing bodies as confirmation that you have passed. Once these certificates have been received, then you will be sent your new licence with the appropriate D/D1 entitlements listed on it.
